LAURA LAINE / GO FIGURE / POSTER
I like to combine opposing elements or elements that are just very different from one another. I like the combinations of fragility and mass, decorativeness and clean lines and movement and stiffness. I think it’s these mixtures that keep my work alive for me, because they provide material for endless research.
I used to be only interested in doing grayscale work, but lately I’ve been more into color. Still the grayscale is closer to my heart, I like the restriction of using only the tonal chart of one color as a challenge, but also that way I can emphasize better textures, shadows, lines and silhouette.
I’ve always liked drawing girls. What I like about illustrating girl characters is that I can identify with them on some level, I feel comfortable playing with the idea of femininity. I also think the feminine body is aesthetically more interesting than the male, and with drawing girls I get to draw a lot of hair which I like. Hair is great because it is a part of the body that can be modified almost endlessly without losing the look of hair, the body itself can only be distorted to a point and then the sense or the real disappears.
