LAURA LAINE / GO FIGURE
I like to combine opposing elements or elements that are just very different from one another. I like the combinations of fragility and mass, decorativeness and clean lines and movement and stiffness. I think it’s these mixtures that keep my work alive for me, because they provide material for endless research.
I used to be only interested in doing grayscale work, but lately I’ve been more into color. Still the grayscale is closer to my heart, I like the restriction of using only the tonal chart of one color as a challenge, but also that way I can emphasize better textures, shadows, lines and silhouette.
I’ve always liked drawing girls. What I like about illustrating girl characters is that I can identify with them on some level, I feel comfortable playing with the idea of femininity. I also think the feminine body is aesthetically more interesting than the male, and with drawing girls I get to draw a lot of hair which I like. Hair is great because it is a part of the body that can be modified almost endlessly without losing the look of hair, the body itself can only be distorted to a point and then the sense or the real disappears.

RICHARD KILROY / GO FIGURE
I’m fascinated by the artistry of fashion illustrators, their unique visual language and their place within the industry. The ability to create imagery that can incorporate or suggest so much more that the limits of photography. With my own work, I like to see what I can take away from the image I have in my mind and what I’m working with, and try to reduce elements to something more graphic, simple and stylized.
My relationship with using pencil in a photo-realist style over the last few years has led to me trying to discover a balance between the elements of photo-realism and loose line work that is more suggestive and evocative. Combining the two is difficult but finding the right balance feels very challenging and rewarding in creating a graphic style that I’m satisfied with. I’m interested in seeing how possible it is to balance what is evocative and what is figurative.

ZOYA SMIRNOVA / GO FIGURE
The creation of hand drawn illustrations allows me to rethink and reinvent the object, the subject and mood. The most exiting thing for me is to draw from real life; the person who catches my eye by their posture, pose, outfit or any other peculiar feature, but what comes out from my hand may not be exactly as they really are. I always add my personal projection of how I see things and how I want them to look at a particular time.
The concept develops alongside the creative process, adding bits of abstraction to the reality. It is in my hands to retell the character by exaggerating or concentrating on particular details, shifting the subject and purpose of drawing wherever I want.
